About Institute

The Institute of Genetic and Regenerative Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was established in 2007 as an academic research institution whose mission is the development and implementation of advanced genetic and cellular technologies for both fundamental science and practical medicine. In 2022, the Institute became part of M. D. Strazhesko National Scientific Center of Cardiology, Clinical and Regenerative Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

The main research directions of the Institute include the development of new technologies for the isolation and cultivation of various types of stem cells to study their properties and regenerative potential on tissue damage models in vitro and in vivo, as well as the implementation of modern methods of genetic diagnostics and therapy.

Our major research directions

  • Basic research into the mechanisms of genetic modification of cells and organisms;
  • Development and application of newer gene technologies for creating genetically modified experimental models, cells and organisms; introduction of newer biotechnological products and models for pharmacological and pharmaco-genetic investigations;
  • Experimental study of the ways and mechanisms of purpose-designed differentiation of adult organism’s stem cells for their further therapeutic use within in regenerative medicine;
  • Study on using embryonic and fetal stem cells and cord blood stem cells for a further creation of the differentiated cell and tissue structures for restitution of injured tissues and organs;
  • Genome studies in humans with various diseases, marker genes polymorphism research in cardio-vascular, neurodegenerative and immune-dependent diseases, malignancies, osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, etc;
  • Early disease diagnostics and prevention using genetically substantiated methods;
  • Essential in the Institute activity is its participation in developing ethical principles for using stem cells, and regenerative and genetic technologies in medical practices.

The Institute consists of three scientific departments.

The Department of Cell and Tissue Technologies concentrates on regenerative medicine, specifically exploring stem cell applications and developing methods for their isolation, expansion, 2D and 3D culture and directed differentiation for cell therapy and tissue engineering.

The Department of Genetic Diagnostics focuses on studying gene polymorphisms' impact on disease susceptibility, clinical course characteristics, and therapy sensitivity across various human diseases (cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, hematological, malignant neoplasms, diabetes, etc.), with the goal of applying gene diagnostics for prevention and pharmacogenetic-based treatment.

The Department of Gene Technologies emphasizes the development and application of new gene technologies to create biotechnological products such as monoclonal antibodies, growth factors, interleukins, as well as the creation of genetically modified experimental models.

The facilities include modern hi-tech equipment: BD FACSAria cell sorter, micromanipulation nanomechanotronic complex, light and luminescent microscopes, biosafety cabinets etc.

The Institute is actively engaged in collaborative research with both domestic and international scientific institutions and medical centers on topics related to regenerative medicine and gene technologies.
